I. Travaux sur les Kharjas

Otto Zwartjes a obtenu une licence et une maîtrise d’espagnol à l’Université d’Amsterdam, Pays-Bas (qualification ‘cum laude’), où il a étudié l’arabe et le portugais. Son travail de recherche a commencé en 1991 quand il a démarré un projet de doctorat consacré aux divers types de poésie arabe d’Andalousie, en particulier les formes fixes, le zajal et le muwaššaḥ et les vers finaux, les kharjas (‘terminaisons’). Le projet était financé par le NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk onderzoek, Netherlands Organisation of Scientific Research), et dirigé par les promoteurs de ce projet Prof. dr. C.H.M. Versteegh, Prof. Dr. Max Kerkhof et Dr. Arie Schippers à l’Université de Nimègue, Departement des études arabes et islamisants. Les kharjas sont des poèmes d’amour, ou des panégyriques. Ils prennent souvent la forme d’une citation, car le poète fait parler un autre personnage: il peut s’agir de femmes, de jeunes gens, d’ivrognes ou même de colombes, qui sont présentés comme chantant le kharja. Deux ans après la soutenance de son doctorat, la thèse fut publié par Brill sous le titre Love Songs from al-Andalus: History, Structure and Meaning of the Kharja (Leiden, etc. 1997, 385 pp.). En 2004, il a publié avec Henk Heijkoop une bibliographie/ discographie intitulée Muwaššaḥ, Zajal, Kharja: Bibliography of Strophic Poetry and Music from al- Andalus and their influence in East and West (Leiden, etc. : Brill, 379 pp.).

Pendant la même période, quand il était maître de conférence (‘assistant professor’) d’espagnol (littérature médiévale et histoire d’espagnol), il a enseigné l’histoire et culture et traduction, dans le Département d’Espagnol et portugais, de l’Université de Nimègue, il a écrit avec Kees van Dooren un livre qui a été utilisé dans toutes les universités aux Pays-Bas et en Belgique, avec le titre Spaanse Geschiedenis en Cultuur tot 1700. Van Prehistorie tot Verlichting. [Histoire et Culture d’Espagne jusqu’à 1700. De la Préhistoire à l’Illustration]. Bussum: Coutinho, 1995 (231 pp.), deuxième édition révisée 2001. Ses autres livres publiés dans le même domaine sont La sociedad andalusí y sus tradiciones literarias (Amsterdam & Atlanta: Rodopi, 1994, 223 pp.) et avec Geert Jan van Gelder et Ed de Moor: Poetry, Politics and Polemics. Cultural Transfer between the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa (Amsterdam & Atlanta: Rodopi, 1996, 152 pp.). 2. Linguistique Missionnaire et Histoire de la linguistique

Par ailleurs, en 2011 est paru chez John Benjamins une monographie de pointe intitulée Portuguese Missionary Grammars in Asia, Africa and Brazil, 1550-1800, préparée alors que Otto Zwartjes était ‘Fellow of the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies’ (NIAS, Royal Academy of Sciences), en tant que l’un des chercheurs les plus renommés au plan mondial dans le domaine intitulé Linguistique missionnaire, qui est un des sous-domaines de l’Histoire de la Linguistique. Comme il a été expliqué dans l’un des compte-rendus parus: « This book is the result of twenty years of research and is of the utmost importance to all researchers in missionary linguistics in any linguistic context. It is, and it will remain, a fundamental reference in the field. This study offers a complete and thorough theoretical and historical study of Portuguese missionary linguistics during the pre-modern period (16th – 18th centuries). As an essential work of reference in this scientific area, Zwartjes' volume deserves to be read, studied and analysed by experts, scholars and the wider public specialising in or interested in this subject ». (Historiographia Linguistica 39, 2012).

En outre, Dr Zwartjes a dirigé le groupe de recherche ROLD (Revitalising Older Linguistic Documentation) affilié à l’ACLC (Amsterdam Centre of Language and Communication) (2006-2017). Cette structure rassemble des experts venant de pays variés et se spécialise dans l’examen de de textes anciens divers (textes grammaticaux produits dans des contextes coloniaux ou non-coloniaux, missionnaires ou non-missionnaires ; vocabulaires rassemblés par des voyageurs et des historiens). Le but est de contribuer au progrès des connaissances dans les domaines suivants : linguistique historique, histoire de la linguistique, analyse socio-structurelle et traductologie. Les membres du groupe se réunissent deux fois par an pour présenter le progrès dans leurs travaux. Dr Zwartjes participe en outre à plusieurs projets internationaux: Corpus de textes linguistiques fondamentaux (CTLF; Paris/Lyon); Research Encyclopedia of Linguistics (OREL, Oxford), The Cambridge World History of Lexicography and O espaço das Línguas (Lisbon).

Dr Zwartjes a aussi organisé et géré dix conférences internationales sur la Linguistique Missionnaire, qui ont été l’occasion de rassembler pour la première fois des experts sur ce sujet venant du monde entier. Cinq recueils d’articles émanant de ces conférences ont été publiés par John Benjamins. Dr Zwartjes est “Investigador Colaborador” dans le Centro de Estudos em Letras, Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Vila Real, Portugal, et est « Profesor Invitado » dans l’école doctorale de Universidad de Valladolid, Spain. Il est “visiting Researcher” et “Guest Lecturer” dans les universités suivantes: Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, UNAM, (FES Acatlán), CIESAS (Mexico City), Guadalajara, Jalisco, Göteborg Universitet, Universidade de São Paolo, Rhode Island College, Universität Basel, Universität Zürich, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven et la Universitetet i Tromsø. Dr. Zwartjes a été invité en tant que “Eminent Scholar” par la Japan Society for the promotion of Science (JSPS) sous les auspices du “Invitational Training Program for Advanced Japanese Research Institutes”. Pendant son séjour au Japon, il a été pris en charge par le Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa (ILCAA)/ Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS).

Otto Zwartjes is an internationally renowned scholar in the fields of cultural and linguistic contact, areas in which he has established world-leading research trajectories. He is particularly acclaimed for his work on Medieval Iberian Hispano-Arabic poetry and the History of Linguistics, in particular Missionary Linguistics. To date he has published 8 monographs, 13 edited volumes, and 66 peer-reviewed articles, all in top-tier journals and with eminent publishers. His major intellectual contributions to his specialist realm of expertise include a monograph on Hispano-Arabic poetry: Love Songs from al-Andalus. This volume is “of great interest to the beginning as well as the advanced scholar of the kharja-s. It is an excellent and thorough selection of a variety of examples” (Aljamía 13, 2001), an “outstanding work, extremely useful and instructive to all those concerned with medieval Romance and Semitic literatures … a most welcome and refreshing trait” (Romance Philology 52, 1999). The Brill Bibliography on Strophic poetry and music from al-Andalus, and their influences in the East and West (with Henk Heijkoop), is another innovative work, an “extensive book of reference, in the historical sense as well as the range of topics. The selective discography completes the picture. This work is indispensable for researchers in the field of literature, cultural history, or music” (Bibliotheca Orientalis 56, 2009).

As one of the world’s most renowned scholars on missionary linguistics, in 2011 as Fellow of the Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS, Royal Academy of Sciences) Otto Zwartjes completed his cutting-edge monograph on Portuguese Missionary Grammars (John Benjamins). This book is the result of twenty years of research and is of the utmost importance to all researchers in missionary linguistics in any linguistic context. It is, and it will remain, a fundamental reference in the field. This study offers a complete and thorough theoretical and historical study of Portuguese missionary linguistics during the pre-modern period (16th – 18th centuries). As an essential work of reference in this scientific area, Zwartjes' volume deserves to be read, studied and analysed by experts, scholars and the wider public specialising in or interested in this subject (Historiographia Linguistica 39, 2012).

In 2006, Dr Zwartjes founded the ROLD Research Group (Revitalising Older Linguistic Documentation) which is affiliated to the Amsterdam Centre of Language and Communication (ACLC). This academic association brings together expert scholars from different countries, and is unique in investigating older texts (colonial, postcolonial, missionary and non-missionary, word lists of travelers and historians) with the following objectives: historical linguistics, the history of linguistics, sociocultural analysis, and translation studies. Under Dr Zwartjes' leadership, ROLD organises a bi-annual meeting of international luminaries in order to further promote its research and findings.

Dr Zwartjes has also organised and managed ten International Conferences on Missionary Linguistics, an event that for the first time brought together scholars with expertise on missionary linguistic sources all over the world. Five volumes of selected papers arising from these prestigious conferences have been published with John Benjamins. (the most recent book has been published in Lima (Fondo Editorial), the proceedings of the eighth internalional conference.

Dr Zwartjes is currently Full Professor at the Université de Paris where he designs and delivers both postgraduate and undergraduate teaching in the History of Linguistics and Historical linguistics (Romance linguistics).

Otto Zwartjes was Chair of Spanish Linguistics and Linguistic Theory at the University of Oslo from 1999 to 2004. Prior to that he was Lecturer in the Spanish Department and Researcher in the Islamic Department at the University of Nijmegen where he finished his PhD project on Medieval Hispano-Arabic Literature (1995). He majored in Spanish Language and Culture at the University of Amsterdam (1986), with minors in Classical Arabic and Portuguese.

Dr. Zwartjes is “Investigador Colaborador” in the Centro de Estudos em Letras, Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Vila Real, Portugal, and Profesor Invitado of the PhD Programme, Universidad de Valladolid, Spain. He is visiting Researcher and Guest Lecturer at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, UNAM, (FES Acatlán), CIESAS (Mexico City) and Guadalajara, Jalisco, Göteborg Universitet, Universidade de São Paolo, Rhode Island College, Universität Basel, Universität Zürich, Tübingen, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the Universitetet i Tromsø. Dr. Zwartjes was invited as Eminent Scholar by the Japan Society for the promotion of Science (JSPS) under the auspices of the “Invitational Training Program for Advanced Japanese Research Institutes”. In Japan he was hosted by the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa (ILCAA) / Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS).
